Quite a few of the stones are weathered and eroded, others feel almost like they rolled out of the sea last week and into position. I heard a rumour in a local pub that lottery money aided some restoration. It is certainly a good tourist attraction

This attractive setting of fifteen small boulder stones is readily accessible, being situated close to the centre of Kenmare. Measuring 17.4 by 15.8 meters in diameter, it is of special interest in being the only example in Munster of an egg-shaped stone ring.

The ring surrounds a boulder-burial consisting of a massive seven ton capstone supported by several low stones. This style of burial appears to be restricted to this part of Ireland: there are over seventy examples in the south Munster area, with apparently just one elsewhere in Ireland.

Apologies for the [camera fault] strip of light that spoiled the photo, but I've not been back since to improve on this. (There is a discussion at the moment regarding how the circle looked before the conifers obscured the views.) (Vote or comment on this photo)

National Monuments Service:
Class Stone circle - multiple-stone
Townland KENMARE
SMR No. KE093-032001-
Description In level pasture, on the SW outskirts of Kenmare town. A subcircular area (17m E-W; 15m N-S) is enclosed by fifteen stones (L 0.8-1.6m; T 0.2-0.7m; H 0.3-1.2m), two of which are prostrate. The axial stone is the lowest and is a regular flat-topped slab contrasting with most of the other stones, which with one or two exceptions, are of boulder type. A boulder-burial (KE093-032002-) occupies the centre of the stone circle. (Ó Nualláin 1984a, 26, no. 41) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011 This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 6/1970).

Re: Kenmare (Notes from an August 2001 visit) by AngieLake on Monday, 19 July 2010

I've got some notes on my visit in August 2001:

"My guide book says “..Set in a riverside glade off Market Street is the “Druid’s Circle”, a prehistoric ring of 15 stones associated with human sacrifice. What a strange place to find a stone circle!
The proximity of modern life always spoils the effect for me – an example in Cornwall being Trethevy Quoit, which has modern houses nearby. Anyway, there was a small hut here, and an invitation to leave your entry fee in the hatch, so, fearing I was being watched from a nearby house, I paid up!"

[Beside a camcorder still - which I will attempt to reproduce later.]
"The ground sloped away quite steeply to the right of this picture: in fact, the whole circle was on a small dome of ground. There were remnants of smaller stones around the outside of the circle: probably other stones that once stood there."

[Beside another camcorder still]:
"This shot shows how the ground slopes away near the lowest flat-topped stone, which could be significant as an astronomical alignment. Or maybe the nearby river was the sacred spot?"

[Beside another camcorder still]:
"I saw what appeared to be a spiral pattern on an anvil-shaped stone, which also had a lot of really bright crystal glinting in it."

I'd noticed the small navel-like hole in the top of the large central boulder, but imagine this was natural.
I didn't dowse or record any alignments. (Have had a quick look for a sketch with no luck.)

I will give that a go ( although it bugs me to pay for the privilege) if you look at the capstone in the centre you will notice it has a scribed line across it facing roughly West I have always suspected that this circle was rearranged slightly in the 18th century landscaping of the area and this line may be a relic of the measures taken to replace the capstone correctly.
Nothing about that circle feels quite right in the general context of the Cork / Kerry group.

I am glad that Rune still finds the ambience here works, for myself I can barely bring myself to go near the place. This is the best example of how to destroy a monuments connection with it's environs that I could find and the fact that it is in my home town is somewhat depressing.
When I first visited the circle sat un-obscured on the small bluff where the River Finnihy meets the Kenmare river with views all the way to the Atlantic, now it is so obstructed by the Leylandii that you cannot even photograph the whole circle.
And for the record, it is in someone's garden! there just happens to be a road between the house and circle.

You're lucky to have seen it before it was landscaped. I agree that not being able to see it in its natural setting is a disadvantage but many natural circles have their sightlines etc obscured by trees now and leave one puzzled as to a lot of factors about the actual location.

Next time you're there, do some breathing exercises and stop as much thought as you can, go to the central boulder, put both hands on the top of it it, close your eyes and wait a couple of minutes. Let me know if you feel any particular sensation.

I'm surprised no-one's commented on how it feels as though you're in someone's garden when you visit this site with its manicured lawns and leylandii hedging. Considering how it's been landscaped, it's wonderful to discover its atmosphere hasn't been affected.

There's a very good display in the museum in Kenmare which gives the history of the site and has an interactive display which shows lots of alignments. It's worth a visit too.

I visited this circle over March Break 2002, and I thought it was absolutely incredable. Some friends and I were strolling through the town one night and encountered a signpost that said Stone Circle, so we followed the signs and found this circle, and to myself and a friend, being pagan ourselves, it was a significant part of our trip. We really enjoyed it. :)
