Giant's Graves (Isle of Arran)

Giant's Graves (Isle of Arran) submitted by tsujigiri on 28th Jul 2005. First shot from behind the site. The day was a bit rainy off and on and the overcast sky made the lighting a bit iffy for my digital camera. The climb up was very invigorating and well worth the effort. Unfortuneately, I neglected to get a shot from the front of the main site. Maybe next time I'm up there.

Log Text: a large chambered cairn with large north facing facade. At its tail is a much smaller chambered cairn facing west. The cairns are on a 'land island' surrounded by lower land, with steep down hill to east (to the coast) and steep uphill to the west. Extensive views to Goatfell NNW.

Gatcombe Lodge

Gatcombe Lodge submitted by thecaptain on 24th Mar 2009. Having read several tales of people being stopped and questioned by rapidly arriving police here, I didn’t spend long, and just took a photo from the entry to the estate. It looks to be the regular shapeless lumpy bumpy mess covered in trees.

Log Text: site is fenced and has mature trees grown on it. these will have destroyed much of the internal structure. Gatcombe is a royal residence with security staff so it is not advisable to go on the land, and there's nout to see anyway.

Gardoms Edge 1

Gardoms Edge 1 submitted by PaulM on 1st Sep 2001. Gardom’s Edge Prehistoric Rock Art, Derbyshire GR: SK273730 One of the finest examples of prehistoric rock art in the Peak District. Discovered in 1965 on a large earthfast boulder 25m east of the enclosure , the design consists of a series of cup and ringmarks together with a small spiral and two circles that enclose multiple cupmarks. Unfortunately, the original boulder had to be reburied some years ago as the pattern was quickly eroding away, but an exact replica fibre glass cast now s...

Log Text: The ends seem very distinct so the two sections do not seem to have ever been joined. The large section seems as it was built, the small section is dismantled. It is about the same width as a modern drystone wall at the base but tapers far less. The smaller section is at a slightly different alignment to the main piece.

It IS visible from local paths.
From the path to the north (Dales high way) through the hills, both sections are on the skyline-very prominent. This might explain the difference in orientation of the two sections.

It is also on the skyline when viewed from near the ring cairn (Lawkland) to its west (probably visible from the cairn before the modern field wall was built).

Log Text: just recumbent and flankers and a few support stones. in a line of old beech trees just below brow of hill. unfortunately this made it an ideal hideaway campsite fo someone who left bottles of ex vodka, some broken, and general rubbish, plus the remains of a campfire. at least they took their tent with them. nout wrong with wild camping, but you're supposed to leave no trace. some folk just don't have the 'skillset' of carrying an empty can.
