From the lane leading from Nether Largie North Cairn, you need to cross a footbridge over Kilmartin Burn at NR 83147 98870. At this time of evening, the dragon flies were flitting over the water and the sheep were starting to gathered in a line along the fence. Following the grassy footpath towards this huge heap of stones, I walked all the way around this cairn, which seemed much larger than the others. There were no real distinguishing features, such as cists or cist covers, that were visible. The mound seemed disturbed in places, with stones pushed out in small ‘arms’ here and there along its edges. Rachel Butter’s Kilmartin book (page 58) says: “The Glebe Cairn: Excavators found two small stone circles beneath the cairn with two finely made pots and a jet necklace placed in two cists. The cairn is smaller than it was a century ago – in 1864 it was at least 4 metres high and 33 metres across.”

Glebe Cairn
Glebe Cairn submitted by PaulH : Kilmartin Valley Glebe Cairn NR 833989 Glebe cairn was constructed between 2000 and 1500 BC. It was built on the site of two earlier stone circles, and contained two burial cists (Vote or comment on this photo)
Cairn (Clava etc.) in Argyll

This prehistoric cairn is recorded as Canmore ID 39537, which contains notes from Greenwell's excavation of 1864, along with a publication account from 1985.

Canmore tells us this is now a massive pile of stones 33.5 metres in diameter and 4 metres high, being the northernmost of the line of cairns on the Kilmartin Glen valley floor.

Canmore adds some observations from Greenwell's notes, saying that in the south west quadrant of the cairn, he found two concentric rings of boulders made of individual stones about 0.9 metres high and 0.6 metres broad. At the centre of these circles was a central cist which contained a vessel and jet necklace. Sadly the necklace was lost in a fire, but the vessel is in the British Museum, London.

Intriguingly, Greenwell also records a central cist which was "a hollow sunk into the surface of the ground, and lined with boulders, having a large slab of schist for its cover." This provides evidence for two different periods of construction.

Glebe Cairn
Glebe Cairn submitted by Anne T : Someone seems to have created a sub-circular hollow out of this part of the cairn. Funny how the stones have spread from the central mound; whether this is how it was left after the excavation, or how the sheep have caused the stones to spread, I wasn't sure. Glebe Cairn
Glebe Cairn submitted by Anne T : The stones of this impressively large cairn have been spread about, creating what look like 'arms' coming from the central mound. Some stones on its lower slopes are covered by turf. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Glebe Cairn
Glebe Cairn submitted by Anne T : Getting closer, it appears this cairn is a huge mound of stones. The Canmore publication report from 1985 says "This cairn measures 33.5m in diameter and 4m in height, with no other distinguishing features" (Vote or comment on this photo)

Re: Glebe Cairn area featured in Kilmartin earthquake cartoon by AngieLake on Wednesday, 17 November 2021

Last night's earthquake in Scotland occurred in the Kilmartin Glen area, nearest town Lochgilphead. Seems they have quite a few up that way, but this article in Daily Mail has a cartoon including what looks like Glebe Cairn posted by Kilmartin Museum. For a bit of fun, see here:
