Reconstruction drawings showing the different ways Neolithic communities closed their burial sites, at Ascott-under-Wychwood, the chamber was walled up; at Hazleton offerings were made; at Fussell's Lodge the wooden mortuary chamber was burnt and a large barrow constructed; and in West Kennet, people simply stopped placing corpses in the tomb. The Devil's Quoits - a restored stone circle and henge in-situ. Quite how this escaped my radar for over a decade until the last month escapes me. So, a varied route across country on midsummer solstice-eve took me to this quite magnificent rebuild. No maps - just a vague 1970s guidebook - took us a couple hours to locate this having gone from Minchinhampton via Hampton Fields to Tetbury to Avening missing the stone at first by a narrow margin.
Having resigned ourselves to a long barrow this stone was spotted with just a few minutes before the sun went below the horizon.
A very impressive 7 feet tall stone, and make sure to see the smaller stone bisecting the wall ...

Ri Cruin submitted by caradoc68 on 23rd Feb 2012. This lovely cairn dates from the Bronze Age and is pretty new when it comes to the Kilmartin landscape. Hidden away in some trees just of the beaten track with its two kist's, this Cairn has a lot to offer with its large Kist's and its rock art of axeheads and possibly a caving of a boat in one of these kists !!.
