Anne T visited on 16th May 2019 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 3 Access: 3 Shovel Down Stone Circle: Before we visited this site, I thought there would be nothing to see, but I was wrong. Whilst there are just three stones remaining, they appear to the eye to sit along the arc of a circle. However, the authenticity of this stone circle is queried by Pastscape. The stones are sited in deep, tussocky grass, I was very pleased to be able to reach this stone circle, not far off the main footpath, using my walking poles to balance. Our GPS recorded the three stones at: SX 65830 86187, SX 65822 86196 and SX 65823 86199

The Stone Circle at the Shovel Down complex is probably the oldest of the monuments in this ceremonial centre.

The remains of Shovel Down stone circle lie up the hillside to the west of the northerly end of row 3. There are only 3 standing flat topped slabs of this 18m diameter circle remaining, but there are 3 other stones lying flat to the ground which are probably part of the circle. Strangely, the circle is not positioned on a flat piece of land, and unusually is on quite a slope.

This stone circle is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 443619. Pastscape doubts the authenticity of the circle, adding that the three stone slabs average 0.7m long by 0.8m high. The stones "appear to be set on the same circumference …. Peat digging has occurred over part of the site, and other stones may have been removed for local walling". The circle is also recorded as MDV29944 (Possible stone circle on Shovel Down) on the Devon and Dartmoor HER, and scheduled as part of Historic England List ID 1017874(The North Teign coaxial field system (western part) and associated later remains at Shovel Down, Stonetor Hill and Long Ridge).

The circle is also featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks website - see their entries for the Shovel Down Stone Circle and the Shovel Down Complex.
