SandyG visited on 7th Jul 2013 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 5 Access: 2 Car parking is available at SX 57055 63069. From here take the track leading north east which follows the northern edge of the Whitehill Yeo china clay pit. Follow this track to SX 59215 62584 then head east for about 700m. The row at Penn Beacon SW may be visted en-route.

Stone Row on the slopes of Penn Beacon, Dartmoor, Devon

This is a single stone row, Burl mentions it SE @ SX 598 627 - 66ft long, Emmett also mentions one in an Exeter University thesis which I have but do not read often as being @ SX 599 625 I know the row to be at SX 5992 6255 is 32m long. Eleven large stones lie flat on the ground. There is no cairn in either direction. The location of this row accords with the Emmett reference. but not with the one for Burl. As both of these references are only 6 figures they can only indicate a location somewhere within a box with 100m a side. There fore SX 599 625 is not destroyed. I never heard of SX 598 627 but interestingly Burl says it is a single row 66 ft long. I think it is actually SX 5992 6255 & Burl has the wrong reference again.

Update November 2019: This row is featured on the Stone Rows of Great Britain website - see their entry for Penn Beacon South, which tells us this row is: "A single stone row measuring 32.5m long, including at least 11 mainly medium-sized stones and a few small-sized stones situated on a south facing slope. The row is orientated WNW to ESE, unusually follows the contour and is situated close to the junction of two later reaves. Nearby are two further stone rows, cairns and several prehistoric settlements".

The SRoGB entry includes a plan of the row, photographs of the alignment, access information and a list of online resources for more information. They also include a section for 'Landscape Comments' which photographs and illustrates a number of interesting and intriguing visual links from the row.

This row is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 439291 and as MDV2400 (Stone row at Penn Beacon, Cornwood) on the Devon and Dartmoor HER.

This row is also included on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entry for the Penn Beacon S. Stone Row, which includes a quote from Lethbridge, saying: "(this is) a single stone row, sixty-six feet long, the largest stone being about 2 1/2 feet high. This row is no more than a remnant". The SRoGB, who visited the site in both July 2013 and August 2019, updates this description, telling us the row in 32.5m long and includes at least 11 stones.
