Shell Top South-West stone row
Shell Top South-West stone row submitted by SandyG : The fallen terminal pillar at the northern end of the row (2nd May 2013). (Vote or comment on this photo)
A 73.5m long single stone row including about 30 slabs most of which are fallen. A large recumbent slab at the northern (upper end) probably represents a fallen terminal pillar and a spread mound at the south is likely to be a cairn.

The row is situated on a relatively steep slope but crosses the contour at a slight angle meaning that a walk along the row is relatively gentle. The row stands next to a reave, runs parallel to it and is likely to be earlier. There is no specific evidence to support this conclusion but work elsewhere on the moor has indicated that the reaves are generally more recent than the stone rows. (Butler, J., 1984, Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities, Vol. 3 – The South West, 173-4).

Update November 2019: This alignment is featured on the Stone Rows of Great Britain - see their entry for Shell Top, South West, which includes a description, a plan of the row and its south-eastern terminal cairn, photographs of the alignment and the individual stones, access information and a list of online resources for more information.

The SRoGB also includes a section for 'Landscape Comments' which discusses and illustrates different landscape features and sea views which come into (and out of) view as you progress along the row - "a series of promontories including Lizard Point, Dodman Point, Penlee Point and Beacon Point are all visible from this row".

The row is also included on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their page for the Shell Top S.W. Stone Row. PDW tells us this row was discovered by Lethbridge in 1992, and SRoGB adds the row runs parallel to a nearby contour reave.

There is no entry on Pastscape for this alignment, but it is recorded as MDV48897 (Stone alignment 535 meters south-west of Shell Top).
