Information about this site, the Great Nodden Cist, came from the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website, which tells us that: "(the cairn was) recorded on the summit (of Great Nodden) in 1891. This was excavated revealing a cist. (This cist is) no longer traceable. This cairn and cist were around 6m away from the Great Nodden cairn".
More details can be found on the Pastscape website, see Monument Number 440519, which tells us that this is "a wedge shaped cist, the sides somewhat elliptical and built up with pieces of slate stone, no slabs or large stones being used. It is about 3ft 6ins in length and 2ft at its broadest; the depth was nto determined. Probably once covered with a cairn most of which has been removed to form a cairn about 20ft off. Not far from the cist a flint flake and a small borer of patinated flint were found lying close together. The cist is in the top of the tumulus .... the cairn is 13.5 metres in diameter. It's top has been badly disturbed and in the centre there is a stone filled hollow which may have contained a cist."
The Heritage Gateway for Devon & Dartmoor HER number MDV4625 (CIST in the Parish of Lands common to the Parishes of Bridestowe and Sourton) dates the cist from the Early Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age (4000 BC to 701 BC). The cairn is also scheduled as Historic England List Entry Number 1007654 (Ring cairn on Great Nodden summit).
