The proposal to site of an Incinerator near Duleek in the Boyne Valley has prompted Ulster Unionist Assembly members Billy Armstrong and Ken Robinson to visit the area and meet with representatives of the Battle for the Boyne group, who are opposed to such a development in that area.

The Mid-Ulster and East Antrim MLA’s issued the following statement: "We are opposed to the siting of an incinerator at the proposed location.

"The World Heritage site at Newgrange in the Boyne Valley together with the extensive lands connected to the Battle of the Boyne create a critical mass of historical interest and influence which surpass anything else on this island.

"The tourist potential of this area is immense and, if handled sensitively, could contribute to a greater understanding of the forces which have shaped all of our traditions.

"The imminent visit by a team from UNESCO to the area may well be the last chance to save the totality of historic evolution in the Boyne region. We are therefore contacting Bertie Ahern in his role as Prime Minister of the Republic of Ireland and perhaps more important, given the current Presidency which the Republic holds in European terms, to see of his Government in conjunction with UNESCO can link the two sites into a comprehensive location which can effectively portray a time line through history on this island.
