The ancient and exotic will be unveiled on Archaeology Days across Northern Ireland later this week. The DOE's Environment and Heritage Service has announced events which will explore topics such as what happens on an archaeological dig and at the rebuilding of a wedge tomb.

There will be demonstrations of ancient weaponry and crafts and a tour of an ancient battle site.

Dr Chris Lynn, of EHS, said: "We are fortunate that Northern Ireland's heritage is richly diverse and this is reflected in the variety of events which will take place this weekend."

Free leaflets are available from libraries and Tourist Information Centres. Archaeology Days information is also available on the website www.ehsni.gov.uk

The events include:

An open day at the school of Archaeology and Palaeoecology QUB; turn your own prehistoric pottery in the Ulster Museum.

Lisburn Castle gardens excavation; conservation workshops, Moira; demonstrations of 17th-century weaponry at Dunluce Castle.

Tour of the site of the Battle of Yellow Ford and other monuments in Co Armagh.

Egyptian themed arts and crafts at Down Museum; conservation in action at Greyabbey; tour of Bagenal's Castle, Newry.

Art, death and genealogy on Devenish Island; exhibitions in Fermanagh County Museum.

A mock archaeological dig in Derry.

Rebuilding of Ballybriest tomb near An Creagan; tours of Newtownstewart and Harry Avery's Castles in Tyrone.
