A university lecturer who has led archaeology summer schools at Castell Henllys Iron Age hill fort for many years has become the first winner of a top award.

Dr Harold Mytum (47), Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at York University, has been coming to Castell Henllys, near Newport, for 21 years and has supervised ongoing digs which have identified the location of several ‘roundhouses’.

Four of the roundhouses, and other structures, have been reconstructed on the site, which has been owned and run by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority since 1991.

Dr Mytum was one of five researchers from across the UK shortlisted for the first ‘Award for the Presentation of Heritage Research’ – run jointly by the Royal Archaeological Institute and English Heritage. This is a new competition designed to encourage the presentation to the wider public of new research on British archaeology, historic buildings and heritage conservation.

The summer school bring students from York and other universities from across the world to Castell Henllys along with school pupils and members of the public keen to learn more about archaeological excavations.

Said Dr Mytum: “The Iron Age is a period which can capture the public imagination, but archaeological sites of the period tend to offer limited interpretative potential. We have tackled that head on at Castell Henllys to make the period come alive, combining archaeological training, excavations and reconstruction.”

His prize, of £1,500, is to be ploughed back into his researches.

Phil Bennett, manager of Castell Henllys, said: “The staff at Castell Henllys and the National Park Authority are delighted that Dr Mytum’s work has been recognised in this way. Over the years hundreds of students and other enthusiasts have taken part in the summer schools and have helped unearth the long and remarkable history of this very important site.

“Castell Henllys is the only Iron Age fort in Britain to be reconstructed on the actual site.”

*Castell Henllys remains open to the public until November 3rd.
