A cluster of ancient tombs dating back to the Warring States Period (475-221 BC) have been excavated at a graveyard in central China's Henan Province. The 58 tombs were excavated at the Tieling Graveyard in the city of Xinzheng, according to the provincial cultural relics bureau.

A large number of delicate potteries were also unearthed, the bureau said.

The 300,000-square-meter area was one of the most important graveyards of the Han Kingdom, one of the seven kingdoms during that period.

It sits about 2.5 kilometers to the southwest of the ancient capital and faces a mausoleum of former kings.

The bureau began excavating the graveyard in May and, to date, has completed about 2,000 square meters.

Archaeologists said the discoveries were valuable for the study of the burial ceremonies during the Warring States Period.

Chinese stone tools introduced to Japan 20,000 years ago: experts

Archaeologists from China and Japan said that a technique used to make stone tools in north China later made its way to Japan in what might've been the earliest exchange between the two cultures some 20,000 years ago.

A joint research project conducted by the Henan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and the Nara Research Institute for Cultural Property found considerable similarities in stone tools unearthed in China, the Republic of Korea and Japan, suggesting a trans-regional spread of the technique used to create them.

The technique, which was used in north China between 20,000 and 25,000 years ago, might've spread to Japan's Kyushu Island through the Korean Peninsula, as the same technique was used in that region as well, said Li Zhanyang, a researcher from the Henan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology.

"The two places, now separated by an ocean, were linked by land 20,000 years ago, when the sea level was much lower," said Li. "This made the spread of the technique possible."

The discovery will shed new light on early migration and cultural exchanges between the Chinese mainland, the Republic of Korea and Japan, said Li. http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/culture/2011-08/03/c_131027429.htm

300 historical relics unearthed in Henan

Recently, archeologists detected a total of 104 well-preserved ancient tomb sites in Longhu town of Xinzheng, Henan province where some buildings were being constructed. Judging from unearthed relics, including bronze ware, pottery, skeletons, shells, jades and nearly 300 other excavated items in all, these tombs were created during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770-256 B.C.).

Judging from its intricate layout and orderly arrangement, this tomb site very likely belonged to a royal family, said Fan Wenquan, leader of the archeology group. He also said the uncovering of the site will provide valuable resources for the research of entombment custom, demographic situation and social structure in the corresponding historical period.

According to the preliminary analysis, the time span of the tombs may lie between the later of Spring and Autumn Period (first half of Eastern Zhou Dynasty, 771-403 B.C.) to the middle of Warring States Period (second half of Eastern Zhou Dynasty, 475-221 B.C.). These tombs are all shaft graves with a full set of funerary objects in each coffin.

Large city ruins from Xia and Shang dynasties found in Henan by coldrum on Sunday, 23 October 2011

Large city ruins from Xia and Shang dynasties found in Henan

Cultural Relics and Archaeology Research Institute of Zhengzhou in Henan Province announced that two large city ruins covering an area of 1.68 million square meters from Xia and Shang dynasties (21st-11th century BC) were found on the site of WangJing Tower (望京楼) in Xinzheng, Henan Province. Experts initially speculated that Xia city ruins probably are one member state's capital city and Shang city ruins probably a military town.

The site of Wangjing Tower was located at Xincun town, 35 km from Zhengzhou. It was found in 1960s and local residents unearthed a series of bronze wares and jade wares. Among the unearthed cultural relics during the Xia and Shang dynasties, Bronze Ax is the biggest one at present in China. In 2006, the site of Wangjing Tower was listed as the cultural relics protection unit of Henan as it provides more than 200 heritage specimens to study the ancient city's construction.

The Xia city ruins of Wangjing Tower were outside of the Shang city ruins with outer moat in between. The whole area is a little smaller than Erlitou ruins in Yanshi. Experts speculate that it probably was one member state called Ge or Zeng state’s capital city. According to the archeological research, the outside city wall, the city moat, the waters around together form a circle and the Xia and Shang city ruins are inside the circle.

The Shang city ruins of Wangjing Tower are well preserved and cover a square region with an area of 370,000 square meters. Archaeologists have discovered the city's gate at the southeast part of the city wall, which is the largest city gate, covering an area of 2,000 square meters. The city gate takes a "凹" shape and is 4.5 meters wide. The whole structure of the city gate and its ancillary facilities indicate the function of military defense. It is the prototype of Wengcheng, rectangular in shape with steep sides.

Deputy director general of Henan Cultural Relics Bureau Ma Xiaolin said Wednesday that the two large city ruins from Xia and Shang dynasties are another important discoveries in the region after the unearthing of Shang city ruins in Zhengzhou, Erlitou ruins in Yanshi among others in Henan Province. They are of great importance to the evolution of ancient cities and dynasties'origins in the ancient 'central plains' around present Henan Province.

Archaeologists excavate past glories from tombs by coldrum on Tuesday, 22 May 2007

Archaeologists excavate past glories from tombs

Archaeologists have unearthed more than 5,000 items dating back 2,000 years from a complex of 385 tombs uncovered at a construction site in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

The local cultural relics and archaeology authorities estimate the tombs cover an area of 50,000 sq m and must have been constructed sometime from the Warring States period (475 to 221 B.C.) to the Yuan Dynasty (1271 to 1368).

They believe 285 of the tombs belong to the Warring States period, 43 belong to dynasties of the Qin (221 to 207 B.C.) and the Han (206 B.C. to 220), 13 belong to the Wei (220 to 265) and the Jin (265 to 420), and 23 belong to the Liao (916 to 1125) and the Yuan.

Chen Yongzhi, vice director of the regional cultural relics and archaeology institute, said the Warring States tombs are oblong shaped and were built in the middle and late periods of the Warring States.

Most of the Warring States tombs were small and simple, Chen said.

Judging from the entombment process and funerary objects found in a large Warring States tomb, the occupant might have been a high-ranking general, the expert said, adding the funerary objects unearthed from the tomb included bronze weapons, a carnelian cup, and a pottery jug and pot.

Together with bronze ritual articles, pottery cooking utensils, iron harnesses and bronze decorations from tombs of other dynasties, more than 5,000 relics were unearthed during the year-long excavation project.

Excavating the graves was significant to the study of customs, cultural tradition, protocol and burial rites in ancient China, said Chen.
