Today on the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Piltdown Man hoax, Timewatch reveals how the scientific community was fooled for over 40 years, and assess the likely perpetrator of the famous fraud. The programme will be shown tonight (Friday 21 November) at 9pm (GMT) on BBC2.

I come from Sussex and was always aware of The Piltdown man as a piece of local or perhaps pseudo-history.Many years ago I remember discussing the case with an eminent Cultural Anthropologist,from the uk,but with a teaching post the Us and he informed me that he felt that many other proto-human remains were doubtful and as he put it "would not stand up for long in a court of law"He told me that me that some other Academics held similar suspicions to his, but a wall of silence surrounded the whole subject.So perhaps things have not changed a whole lot since The Piltdown Man was exposed? An interesting thought?
