The prehistoric and Roman history of Warburton in Greater Manchester will be showcased at a new exhibition at Warrington Library that opens today, Thursday. The display by archaeologist James Balme gives visitors the chance to look back on what the settlement was like 2,000 years ago. James has spent many years excavating in the Warburton area and for the first time, his Bronze Age and Roman finds will be put on public display.

He said: "I have done a lot of presentations on my work and a lot of people have asked to see the actual finds for themselves.

"The idea is to promote the work we have done in Warburton."

Alongside the artefacts, which include an axe and coins, there will be a chance to buy videos of James' work, which are now being sold up and down the country.

Warburton was home to a large fort where up to 80 Roman soldiers patrolled the area and protected the Mersey river crossing.

Meanwhile, the history of Warburton will also be the topic of discussion at a special evening in May.

James will again be the host on May 8 at Hollins Green Community Hall from 7.30pm, to give a presentation on the discovery of the ancient settlement and also of the history surrounding the Roman invasion of Middlewich.

You can book tickets for the event, priced £4 for adults and £2 concessions, by writing to Historic Media Productions, Brook House Studio, 185 Glazebrook Lane, Glazebrook, WA3 5AY.

The library exhibition, to be opened by Mayor Clr Pauline Nelson, runs until the end of April and is free to enter.

Re: Warburton Exhibition by Anonymous on Monday, 05 April 2004
My name is James Balme and I am pleased to be able to exhibit all of my finds from the ancient settlement of Warburton that I have discovered over the past six years.

The star of the exhibition is a unique and rare Early Bronze Age ritual copper axe in pristine condition dated by the British Museum to 1900BC.
It is Identical to three other examples recovered from the rich Bronze Age burial at Bush Barrow in wiltshire, part of the Stonehenge complex.
More details of my work can be found at my web site address.
