Tackling 10,000-year-old mystery United States

Country: United States Ten thousand years ago, a band of nomadic hunters stampeded 600 bison off the edge of a small cliff then speared and butchered the beasts before hauling off the meat... Or maybe not.

Maybe, instead, a lightning bolt or a swift-moving grass fire killed the whole herd, and their remains were quickly buried beneath wind-blown sand and silt.

A few decades later, hunters camped on the buried bison remains, leaving behind stone spear points and tools that, over the millennia, have mixed with the animal bones.

Those conflicting interpretations confronted University of Colorado archaeology students last month at the Hudson-Meng Bison Kill on the Oglala National Grassland, about 330 miles northeast of Denver.

QUOTE: "In the classroom, things are presented as 'This is how it happened,' " said Kirsten Smith, a junior anthropology major.

"But out here we see the process in action, the process of gathering information to support different interpretations," Smith said.

And here we have the problem. You do not gather the information to support a theory, you gather the evidence to form a theory. As Grissom says in CSI, "Follow the evidence"

At best this is a scientific ego trip at worst bad science.

As the article mentions there are many "jumps" across the US and Canada. "Head-Smashed-In" is a fantastic site with a great museum explaining it. (I visited in 2000 - I've been trying to figure out how to transfer my slides easily to an electronic file.)

The argument about the CO site seems to be how early the people could have pulled off this kind of kill. All this ought to take is a bone with cut marks on it.
The "alternate theories strike me as pretty unsubstantiated. The idea that stone tools can easily "migrate" to a deeper strata of soil sounds like opening a can of worms no archeologist wants to support.
