Hiya! A few years ago I moved from Oxfordshire back to my hometown of Bristol. Close to our new house, in Mangotsfield, we found a group of 4 stones. Set in a circle, atop a hill, a couple of degrees off cardinal - they look like a stone circle to me. A string of HV pylons prevented any useful magnetic compass readings at the time.

I visited the site today to get an accurate GPS grid ref and to take some photographs.

The site is not on the map, nor can I find any reference to it on ADS. ADS does show a few finds of flints and flint shards within the area, along with a load of Roman through 19c settlement evidence as well (not unexpected for the area!)

So, does anyone else know of these stones? Local people don't even seem to know they are there, you cannot see them from the road... Any info drop me a message via my profile, thanks.

I was born in this area in 1957 and now live in Australia since 1988 but travel back to see my family in Mangotsfield every 18 months or so. On my visits I aways visit the stones and enjoy the energies and carry out ceremony's to acknowledge pagan rituals. I remember many energy stones but only one circle of stone (as your picture) also odd stones scaterered in what appeared to be indescrimately placed around the same site but the feeling was that these were meaningful . Shortwood, east Mangotsfield, Pucklechurch and Westerliegh have always been energy spiritual, pagan, wiccan strongholds in past years. Enbrace the energy and you will have a better understanding of why this very old site was chosen.

hi i live 3 mins away and am interested in anything pagan to do with this site. the only story i can help with is apparently 60 years ago a coven in shortwood had something to do with it but nobody seems to know anything else. i myself have lived here for over ten years and only recently discoverd it. kirstie. will check bak on your site to see of your developments n to contact u if i find anything.

ive seen those stone circles as well, there just off from the new cycle path from emersons, they look worn and close up bloody old, like to find out more bout these secret stones.

I forgot to add, what are the chances of these being modern? I've posted some pics of the site, including a closeup of the North stone.

Anecdotal evidence points to a signpost directing walkers to the site in the 1950's, but I've not found any maps, photograps or records of the site.

    If this is not modern, then it is an astounding find.

    I can not see how the contributors to this site, including myself, could be unaware of this circle, if it is prehistoric.

    It must be a modern construction.

    Stone circles were very rarely placed on the very top of hills.

      Indeed, but this one is now only on a hill after the building of a new road. Until then it was on the edge of a flat-ish piece of open land. The land to the east of the circle has been dug away, used to create a bank to stop road noise from the new A4174 affecting nearby residents.

      It's original position can be seen on an older OS map of the area. If you check the grid ref, the hill they stand on is not there... A local resident remebers a signpost "to the stones", but I've not found any doucumentary evidence to support this.

      I too cannot believe they are older than a few years...
