Ketley Crag Rock Shelter 1
Ketley Crag Rock Shelter 1 submitted by stu : NU0743 2978. Is there anything better looking? I'd say not.....lots of other impressive cup and ring carvings on the walk over from Chatton Hill. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Hexham's own rock star, Stan Beckensall had the crowd on its feet at his latest gig. But Stan is no hip-thrusting young stud with guitar and pout – he’s a retired headmaster of scholarly bent.

He is one of the world’s leading authorities on prehistoric rock art, and was one of the main speakers at a major symposium of world experts in Italy.

Valcomonica is a World Heritage Site for rock art, and around 40 countries were represented at the conference, which was spread over seven days.
Stan represented Great Britain independently, and gave a vivid and graphic short talk, without notes, on places where rock art is found in Britain, the state of research and threats to preservation.

His work in Northumberland form a major British website at Newcastle University.

He was very well received, and was amazed that no British organisation was formally represented at the gathering.

A 500-page A4 book produced for the conference included 14 pages by Stan, and one particular slide of the recently recorded Ketley Crag rock shelter floor at Chatton drew a gasp from the audience.

His printed paper was the end product of a new book on the Rock Art of Kilmartin, Argyll, which draws together the fundamentals of rock art study, and which is to be published in the next few months.

Thats excellent and Stan certainly is a star. During the summer (late July-early August) 2005 there will be a rock art recording field school in Valcamonica - have a look at the Archaeology Safaris field schools page, for more details. Its also worth pointing out that Rock Art in Britain and the research of it, has still amazingly, to prove its worth within academia. However there does seem to be a change in this view and this is reflected in a number of projects now being run. have a look at the projects page of our website for more info. AS
