A leading heritage centre in the North West of Ireland was today preparing to launch its new summer programme of events. The Sperrin Heritage Centre has organised a host of events and activities for the coming months. In all, some 12 events have been organised at the centre over the coming months.

The events will include Sunday sessions, involving local artists, and hill walks, which will take in the geology, landscapes and archaeology of the Sperrins.

Philip McShane, tourism officer with Strabane District Council, said he was delighted with the programme.

"In recent years, the Sperrin Heritage Centre has endeavoured to increasingly place itself at the forefront of providing the focus locally for the celebration of our cultural heritage," said Mr McShane.

"This has been achieved not only through the static interpretation at the centre itself but also through a number of events, which include music, dance, storytelling and crafts.

"This year we are delighted to be able to expand our programme and, as the season progresses, we will be hoping to identify even further opportunities which will not only enhance the overall visitor experience to the area but will also help to preserve our cultural heritage for the enjoyment of generations to come."

On Sunday, May 30, storyteller and musician Willie Drennan will entertain, while a "Night of Crak, Tae And Scones" will follow a few days afterwards on Friday, June 4.

For enquiries call the heritage centre at 8164 8142.
