Samhain, 31 Oct 6-8pm.
Come along to the National Roman Legion Museum and celebrate Halloween - celtic style!
Join in the celebration (6-8pm) with Celtic and Roman themed games and activities, a fancy dress competition, story telling and a scary room - not for the faint hearted! Also don't forget to bring your own torch.
Halloween is marked by many across the country on the night of 31 October by dressing up and trick-or-treating, but it can be sourced back to an ancient Celtic Festival called Samhain.
A pagan holiday dating back to the Iron Age Celts, Samhain was considered to be the Celtic New Year. It was adopted by the Romans as their own festival when they invaded Britain.
Many parts of this festival are echoed in our modern Halloween parties.
Jack O lanterns were originally made from turnips and used to guide the dead back to earth, and the Celts also dressed in costumes much as we do today, but they would use animal skins!
