<< News >> Russia: Archeologists find ancient writings on Sochi’s dolmens

Submitted by Andy B on Monday, 01 December 2008  Page Views: 4190

Neolithic and Bronze AgeCountry: Russia Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen

Internal Links:

The monuments date between the end of the 4th millennium and the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC. Members of Sochi geographical Society have discovered ancient writings on Dolmens located in the Sochi area. During their expedition scientists saw images on some of the stones and noticed that they closely resemble Asian petroglyphs.

They also believe that these petroglyphs are not just pictures, but have a meaning.

Historians from Moscow will help their colleagues from Sochi to prove or disprove this theory. The Russian “Culture” TV channel are making a film about dolmens in Sochi.

Sochi Travel Info has photos and a map of Dolmens in Western Caucasus.

This flickr photostream is very interesting, one shows a dolmen incorporated into someone's garden, others are in the woods near Sochi
