I was tempted to dismiss this story as another off-the-wall one from Pravda but it's apparently based on a quote from Christopher Chippendale (he of the book Stonehenge Complete) and Rock Art expert Paul Tacon. Pravda don't say where this story hailed from, perhaps a conference, any more information welcome...

Archeologists have discovered rock paintings depicting strange creatures and called them teriantrops, hybrids of humans and animals. Researchers believe that ancient artists made the painting from life.
Paul Tacon from the Australian Museum in Sydney and anthropologist Christopher Chippendale from the University of Cambridge say that such hybrids, including centaurs, were highly likely living side by side with primitives. In Australia and South Africa, the researchers discovered dozens of rock paintings showing animals with human heads and humans with animal heads that may be over 32 thousand years old.

They have had the first in history detailed study of the strange drawings. The study covered about 5,000 rock paintings of our ancestors; the researchers systematized the frequency and the types of depicted teriantrops and determined their ages. They arrived at a conclusion that animal men actually existed in the remote past. They believe that primitives could hardly draw what they never saw.

Myths of Ancient Greece and Rome also tell us about animal men, and centaurs are the most frequent ones. These are creatures with the human torso transforming into the feet of a horse or some other animal, a bull, a donkey, a sheep and even a goat. The word centaur is a compound of KEN (kenw) meaning "I kill" and TAUROS meaning "bull", and it reveals astronomic knowledge of our ancestors. When the constellation of Sagittarius (Centaurus throwing a spear) appears in the night skies, we can no longer see Taurus, one of the Sun symbols.

The anciet legends say that centaurs came down from the Greek mountains where they failed to keep up friendly relations with the local population. As far as some centaurs loved drinking wine, they easily flew into a rage and conflicted with people.

Mythology expert, Candidate of historical sciences Alexander Guryev says that animal men were the result of sex contacts between men and animals, which were quite typical of the ancient epochs. The expert adds that many people believed that they descended from animals: Tibetans believed they descended from monkeys, Hindu believed that horses were their ancestors and people in Thailand thought they descended from the dog.

This is a part of what we work on preserving traditional knowledge. We know for a fact that giants and what the American Indians call water babies or mere people (not scaled, but more like seals and dolphins where they are streamlined for swimming) did exist. There are many pictures of them clearly depicting them. Some have attributes that reflect the same things seen in European or Middle Easter or even Asian artwork from much later periods (American depictions from before 18,000 years ago, non-American similar artwork from after 3000 BCE.)

Since the girl with mermaidism recently had her legs separated in Peru, and that trait is common in the world, and the look of the alternative form is the same as many drawings, rockart and classical artwork depicting mermaids, it is not a far stretch of the imagination to research these other depictions. While I do not think the people or creatures are necessarily the animal that they are depicted represented by, hard to say what made the development of such figures. Easy to see how people would assume the contact between people and animals was the reason. Not necessarily in a formation that appears to mimic another pre-existing creature.

The Paiutes of Pyramid Lake in Nevada, USA, captured and burned a group of cannibalistic redheaded giants within the past 500 years. That the traditional knowledge or TK has such clear information as the fact the giants were red-headed, wore blankets, wove baskets designed with a big plant material spike hook inside the bottom to catch and tenderize the Paiute children tossed in there for a late lunch by the giants is pretty accurate and is universal amongst the Paiuti. There are rockart pictures of little guys running from big blanket wearing giants from extremely remote times and in areas now totally desert and not the lush lakes of the Pleistocene all over the North American Southwest.

It is certainly true for some of the American clans that the descendents, even the mixed blood ones after the invasion, look very similar to the animals. Who knows? So many groups of invaders and religious indoctrinators have messed up indigenous or local traditional knowledge over the past 500 years. The ease with which we tell and revitalize historic fact has certainly taken a slump due to the post-Victorian post-secondary printed works saying there is nothing valid in the information. That was without the research or the ethnological forewithall to do any such research. It is not surprising to see people who grew up in such educational systems saying there are no such animals as though that is the fact. It is not. For one thing, in a similar case, I do know that the horse is genetically related to white rhinos rather than hippos. Hippos are related to cows. So if horses and rhinos are cousins, unicorns are not that far off the believability scale. We shall see.

Obviously doesnt know a lot about biology.
If it was April 1st i'd think it was a joke.
And dont they give our ancestors credit for having an imagination.
You should the bizarre creations my brother draws.
Doesnt mean he's actually seen it in real life.

Total tosh! Paintings of humans with animal heads depict shamans on a trip with their animal totems and/or animal masks. Transitional paintings of human/animal hybrids portray the same thing - the shaman "transforming" into his totem animal. Centaurs derive from the appearance of mounted tribes from the steppes as first seen by more settled pedestrian communities. When someone digs up a centaur's skeleton - I shall believe. Ditto the skeleton of a human with a tail and hooves.
