The distinctive style of regular Portal photographers can often be apparent even without seeing their names - Sem is remarkable for high definition and crispness, Nicola for superb quality of light, Angie for unusual angles, Creators for atmosphere that you can really feel. There are many, many more - perhaps we should run some features on individual photographers - their style and techniques - any nominations? Who are your favourite Portal photographers?

Why not make your own assessments of the pictures that you see on the Portal? A ratings box is shown next to each photograph and all that you have to do is select a number from 1 to 10 to indicate your opinion. Simply select your rating and click! Everyone's opinion is valid and photographers will get valuable feedback if more people enter ratings. The scores are averaged out so if one person give a rating of 10 and another of 6 then the average will be shown as 8.

Each of us will have our own preferences and ways of looking at and valuing photographs. This is my way - you can adopt it if you wish or do something completely different. I must stress that I don't give a rating for most photos and that is not because I don't think that they are any good - its just because I don't feel particularly strongly about them and don't want to make rating them a chore. Its something I do when I feel like it. I rarely give a poor picture a rating unless I think its really bad, so confine myself to higher ratings only:

10 Excellent composition, focus, lighting and atmosphere with that certain something special that says something meaningful about the location

9 Excellent composition, focus, lighting and atmosphere

8 Three qualities are excellent - out of the four shown in 9

7 Two qualities are excellent - out of the four shown in 9

6 One quality is excellent - out of the four shown in 9

Sometimes I just throw all of that out of the window because someone has grabbed a rare and difficult shot. The composition, lighting etc may be dodgy, but the picture is unique and unrepeatable and that makes it special.

That's just my way - you can choose any criteria you like or just rate the photos that appeal to you. Your opinions can count and will be shown to count.
