Our Protected Past Conference - 13-17 July 2002, University of Exeter
Managing the historic environment in Europe's National Parks and protected areas.

For thousands of years people have influenced the landscapes in which they live. Nowhere can this be seen better in Britain than in the National Parks.
This major international conference will present and develop our understanding and management of the historic environment in National Parks and other designated areas throughout Europe. Originally planned for 2001, to mark the 50th anniversary of Britain's first National Parks, the conference had to be postponed because of the foot and mouth epidemic.
The venue will be historic university and cathedral city of Exeter.
The programme will include keynote addresses by prominent international speakers and there will be an extensive programme of lectures, workshops and displays. Visits will be made to the nearby Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks to present case studies and illustrate conference themes.

The Programme

 Integrated management of the historic and natural environment
 Buildings and settlements
 Landscape identifications and assessment
 Visitor management
 Agriculture, forestry and other development
 Industry
 Coasts and wetland
 Soft culture; traditions, stories and songs
 Managing change in the historic environment
 Designation practice

The conference will be pan-European in scope and will appeal to all those interested or involved in the management of the historic environment within protected landscapes – whether they are working in government, local authorities, universities or the private sector.

The official language of the conference will be English. Limited translation facilities will be available. Proceedings form the conference will be published.

The conference will be organised by the UK National Park Authorities and English Heritage, the countryside Council for Wales, the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales and others.
