The Hemlock Stone
The Hemlock Stone submitted by TimPrevett : The Hemlock Stone - a towering natural outcrop with myths and legends, west of Nottingham. A good page for more informationis here http://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/staplefordhill_hemlock.htm (Vote or comment on this photo)
In Northern Earth issue 133: A round up of news on sustainable energy vs heritage, threatened sites, Interfaith Network prejudice, a goddess restored and other pieces of antiquarian interest from the Americas, Australia and Europe, with a Glastonbury update on the Holy Thorn vandalism and a proposed Hollywood blockbuster.

* Mike Haigh summarises excavations and finds in South Ronaldsay, Loftus, Nevern, Blick Mead, Truro, Maryland and Ohio, and warns that the 2012 floods may awaken the ominous side of the Gypsey Race.
* John Billingsley offers a tribute in folklore, myth and magic to the under-threat ash tree, and tells a heart-warming local story of a significant ash tree, and elsewhere discusses the role of love and sentiment in the emergence of new folklore, with reference to Juliet's House in Verona, love-locks on bridges and Sylvia Plath's grave.
* Stuart McHardy visits Carlin Maggie, to find both phallicism and the Divine feminine - it's all in the approach.
* David Taylor reviews the curious and mysterious case a woman found in a Wych Elm tree in the 1940s.
* Readers write in on Nottingham's Three Stones Project, Leeds troll warnings and Thirteen Stone Hill in Lancashire.
* plus of course the usual reviews telling readers what's good to read, what's good to avoid, and moaning about poor proofreading nowadays....

Northern Earth 133 is now available in selected shops and online. Single issues are available for £2.25 post free. Send Cheques to NE at 10 Jubilee St, Mytholmroyd, HX7 5NP or purchase via their website www.northernearth.co.uk, where books and a range of back issues are also available.
