ResourcesCountry: England The Archaeology Data Service (ADS) has launched a new online Library of Unpublished Fieldwork Reports. It is widely recognised that archaeological research is often hampered by the difficulty of getting access to unpublished fieldwork reports. Currently the new service contains 177 previously unpublished reports in a resource that will become invaluable to local researchers across the country.Many reports are produced annually as part of major developement projects but these reports are rarely published. They are often produced by archaeological contractors to report small fieldwork projects - this 'grey literature' has limited circulation and is often invisible to the research community.
This new electronic library delivers a significant and growing number of these unpublished reports into the hands of researchers across the archaeological community.
The website ADS already contains a number of useful research tools so the grey literature library augments the value of the online resource.
The Library can be found here and this initiative brings together unpublished reports currently supplied to the ADS from a range of field units. Some have been drawn from larger fieldwork archives which may contain additional data, for example the Channel Tunnel Rail Link archive, while others continue to be submitted through the 'OASIS' project. Funded by English Heritage, OASIS aims to provide a comprehensive index to the mass of archaeological grey literature that has been produced as a result of developer-funded fieldwork.
The 177 reports available represent contributions from the following units:

*Canterbury Archaeological Trust
*Geophysical Surveys of Bradford (GSB)
*Hereford and Worcester County Council
*MoLAS
*Oxford Archaeology
*Suffolk County Council Archaeological Services
*ULAS
*Wessex Archaeology
The database is fully searchable and reports can be downloaded easily - many are in PDF format.
The Archaeology Data Service (ADS) supports research, learning and teaching with high quality and dependable digital resources. It does this by preserving digital data in the long term, and by promoting and disseminating a broad range of data in archaeology. The ADS promotes good practice in the use of digital data in archaeology, it provides technical advice to the research community, and supports the deployment of digital technologies.
