Piper's Crag Stone
Piper's Crag Stone submitted by andy_h : A prominent outcrop featuring deep Cup and Ring markings. The Northern Edge of Ilkley Moor is strewn with marked rocks. Between the Swastika Stone and Piper's Crag Stone are The Anvil and The Sepulchre Stone, who's markings were unfortunately too worn to photograph well. This also applies to the nearby Neb Stone. A large upended rock with 'possible' cup marks, laying on other cup marked stones no... (Vote or comment on this photo)
An exhibition to explore perceptions of prehistoric rock art, time and landscapes in Britain has just opened at Ilkley Manor House Museum. The exhibition aims to explore what prehistoric rock art, its time-depth and its landscapes mean to us today. It also explores how these different meanings and perceptions can be captured and communicated. It intends to move beyond traditional ways of portraying rock art and its surroundings, empasising the dynamic continuity of the landscape and illustrating how the past pervades the ideas and identity of the present.

By presenting alternative perspectives on the rock art and on our relationship to them and by exploring new ways of communicating these ideas, the exhibition aims to stimulate public imagination, to challenge preconceptions of ownership and to raise awareness of the engravings and their place in our world today.

A variety of media and approaches are used to explore these themes, including photography, digital image enhancement, sculpture, archive material, poetry/words, interactive media (including textiles, wood and stone).

It runs for 9 weeks up to 21st November in the Manor House Museum and Art Gallery, Ilkley, forming part of the Ilkley International Literature Festival.

Andy_H, the Portal's Guide to Rock-Art, has six pictures in the exhibition. But he's too modest to mention it! :-)

I beleive its time that this area of research should be put on a country wide footing (the reaction I get from leading anthropolgists). Archaeologists seem to think that the engraved Ibex in a cave at creswell crags is all that matters, and seem to ignore the rest?, which is just as important. Arthur, Burbage, Leic`s.
