Neolithic and Bronze AgeAlthough most of Britain's Tourist attractions are open, most farmland is still off-limits, meaning that most megalithic and other ancient sites are still closed to visitors. There are however a couple of islands at distant ends of the country that are more open: Orkney and the Scilly Isles.The latter wasn't on my list of megalithic places to visit, but after receiving a great photo set from visitor Andy Creigh I've changed my mind!
See all the sites we know are open here http://www.stonehenge.uklinux.net/search.php?open=2
See the list of all the sites in the Scilly Isles, including the fantastic new photo set from Andy Creigh here. http://www.stonehenge.uklinux.net/search.php?&county=90
My favourite picture is of South Hill - what an outlook! http://www.stonehenge.uklinux.net/article.php?sid=6333305 - don't forget to click the pics for the hi-res images.
Thanks Andy, and remember that we're always delighted to have photo submissions and comments to fill in our holes. See the FAQ for how to submit them.
We now have over 100Mb of atmospheric ancient site images for you to download and enjoy so have a good browse. Most of the images are still at http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~aburnham/stones.htm
Lots of sites in Orkney are now open too. Here are some recommendations from the tourist office that apply equally well to Scilly.
On arrival in Orkney do heed the disinfection procedure and when in Orkney;
Do not touch or feed farm animals
Do not enter enclosed fields
Do avoid farm steadings and yards
Do not leave waste or scraps of food or litter
Do not park your car where animals gather
Do keep dogs on a lead at all times
Do clean your footwear and vehicle between visits to the countryside
Do obey official notices
Do respect advisory signs and requests from farmers/landowners
Cheers,
Andy
