A Project to recreate an ancient lake village in Glastonbury is expected to be discussed on a national television programme.

Mendip District Council is putting together a bid as part of the Somerset-wide Waterlinks scheme, which could bring up to £50M into the county.

Waterlinks is one of six projects in the UK to get through to the second stage of the Big Lottery Fund's Living Landmarks: The People's Millions competition.

Waterlinks is a collection of projects across Somerset, and has been awarded £500,000 from the Big Lottery Fund to develop a plan for how waterways around Somerset can be revolutionised as a celebrated asset of the county.

There are various projects being considered across Somerset, including the construction of a lake village centre in Glastonbury, based on an Iron Age village discovered in the late 19th Century.

The proposed location is on land near the Morlands Enterprise Park.

In addition, there is a series of smaller projects under discussion, including a proposed Wetland Heritage Centre; the development of a bus service and changes to the Abbot's Fish House site near Meare; and development of the Highbridge-to-Glastonbury railway line cycle way.

The year 1892 helped put Glastonbury on the historical map as one of Europe's archaeological sites, following the discovery of the Glastonbury Lake Village.

The amazing find was made by Arthur Bulleid who was investigating what appeared to be mole-hills in a field. He discovered the lake village, which was made up of five to seven groups of roundhouses constructed from alder and oak wood, covered with reeds.

Many of its residents would have lived between 250BC and 50BC.

The district council is discussing ideas with landowners, members of the public and other interested organisations in order to win the backing of local people.

Mendip District Council must submit its business case for the district's projects by the middle of April so that the Waterlinks bid can be submitted by the end of May.

The television vote is expected to take place in October.
