Knowlton Rings
Knowlton Rings submitted by TheCaptain : Knowlton Circles, Dorset, SU024103. Ruined church inside a lovely henge, viewed from the south. Struggling with Paintshop in an attempt to join several pictures together. Not the best results, but I dont think too bad for only my second attempt. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The Knowlton Prehistoric Landscape Project is an archaeological investigation into the prehistoric relict landscape located within the Allen valley in the county of Dorset, England, UK. The Allen valley is a modest river valley situated on chalk down land at the eastern side of Cranborne Chase, an area which encompasses one of the densest concentrations of prehistoric monuments in north-west Europe.

The fourth season of excavations and survey will take place at High Lea farm, Hinton Martell, Dorset, between Monday August 9th and Friday September 2nd 2005. The programme of work is likely to include the continued excavation of an Early Bronze Age Barrow and possibly further examination of Iron Age and Romano-British deposits forming part of an extensive agricultural settlement identified in 2003 Summary of field work 2002-3.

Extensive geophysical and topographical surveys will be carried out at the site giving participants the opportunity to experience a wide variety of instrumentation and techniques including GPS, GPR, fluxgate gradiometry and earth resistance amongst others. Applications are now invited from individuals wishing to join the project either as volunteers or as students wishing to gain credit rated experience.

The field school is offered to students and volunteers who wish to gain experience in archaeological field practice at several levels up to and including a full credit rated programme.

The Web site for the Knowlton Prehistoric Landscape Project including information for participation for summer 2005 has been just put up. Please look at the following link for details.
