Saturday and Sunday July 30th & 31st 2005

The Saturday in North Dorset itinerary will be at the discretion of the group, but may include sites such as the Knowlton Rings, Stones around Blandford Forum, Dorset Cursus Barrows and Hod Hill Hillfort.

The Sunday around the Isle of Purbeck area will start for 10am at Rempstone Stone Circle, and then on to other sites around the Studland and Purbeck Hills area, such as the Studland Stone Row, and The Harp Stone.

Day One - Saturday 30th July, North Dorset:

I am unable to make it on Saturday, but there is much in the area which could be taken in. The following sites were prominent in my research for the area: Bokerley Dyke near the A354 at SU033199; Hambledon Hill Iron Age Hillfort & Neolithic Causewayed camp, and longbarrows 240 feet +, Hod Hill Iron Age & Roman Fort - car park off minor road to Child Okeford from A350; Oakley Down, claimed to be the best roundbarrow cemetery in Dorset, NE from Sixpenny Handley on A354 Blandford - Salisbury Rd SU018 173. Thickthorn Down - south end of the Dorset Cursus - next to Neolithic Long Barrow seen from road. Not far from A354 Blandford-Salisbury road. A good starting point would be Knowlton Rings; there are over 40 barrows in the area; be warned about dogs in the area - Julian Cope's dog bite is not the only canine encounter noted around here.

Day Two - Sunday 31st July, Isle of Purbeck:

Start for 10am at Rempstone Stone Circle, uphill while the day is young to Nine Barrow Down, and then on to Studland** for the stone row, Puckstone and Agglestone, then to Corfe Castle for some barrows, west for The Harp Stone, and maybe an easy evening walk to the disappearing Flowers Barrow hillfort.

Packed lunch for Sunday, likely call at The New Inn at Church Knowle Sunday PM.

*Sometimes factors on the day necessitate last minute changes, so sites listed here may be missed, or substituted with other sites should need dictate.

** Important! A possible hazard when visiting Studland Heath is the presence of adders, our country's only venomous snake. They will not bite unless they feel threatened. A dog receiving an adder bite will need vet's treatment, and a human receiving a bite will require prompt medical treatment. Please be aware. See the the BBC site for more information about adders.
