Much of this activity is not visible on the ground, Mesolithic shell middens, post defined cursus monuments and other timber settings, such as the Dunragit complex (see Motte of Droughdool) are are known only from aerial photography and subsequent excavations.
There is however an abundance of upstanding monuments to interest a visitor to the area, although many are situated in remote areas that can only be reached on foot. For those prepared to make the effort, the walking is mostly on good paths across the moors or in the forestry with often breathtaking scenery and megalithic delights as reward.
There are chambered cairns, passage graves & long cairns from the Neolithic period. There are round cairns, cists, burnt mounds, standing stones, short stone rows, stone circles and rock art. For those who tire of prehistory there are the great abbey churches of Glenluce, Dundrennan & Sweetheart and the Whithorn Priory founded by St Ninian, or if the weather is inclement, the museums at Stranraer & Dumfries are recommended as is the Gem Rock Museum in Creetown.
