As a guide to newcomers as well as old hands, it might be a good time to remind ourselves of the content and scope of the Megalithic Portal. What do we cover and what do we exclude - what is in and what is out?

British and Irish Sites
Basically, we attempt to cover in depth all of the prehistoric sites in Britain and Ireland. Later sites of pre-Norman crosses, brochs, Pictish stone slabs as well as sacred springs and holy wells are also included. These will all have main site entries and will be shown on the megalithic map by green or red symbols. You will need to look at the close-up maps to see these. Sites that we have no photographs of are shown green. As soon as we receive the first photograph of a site, the site entry is changed from a Text Page to a Photo Page. Then the symbol will show red on the close up maps. Photo captions should give information about that which is shown in the photograph. Fuller information including locations, access and nearest towns etc. will be found on the main sites. The Portal gives access to an enormous amount of information via the coloured icons on each site page - old and modern maps, aerial photos etc. etc. Just go and see what is available by clicking on any or all of the icons.

Exclusions
We do not cover Roman sites or anything later than the Norman Conquest. This means that medieval carvings of sheela-na-gigs, green men, fonts, churches, castles and market crosses are beyond our remit. The one exception is that of well houses. These are always medieval or later, but the wells themselves are invariably much older and impossible in most cases to date.

International
Foreign sites are now beginning to appear more frequently and they will eventually contain the same sort of information as the British sites. We need more of these and in particular, we need people with photographs and the knowledge to guide us to these places. Browse through the Gallery to see what we have at present - Easter Island, Malta & Gozo, Sweden, Spain and Portugal and many more. Coverage is prehistoric, but we include a very few examples of sites from the historic periods of countries such as Egypt because of the extreme antiquity of the beginnings of their historical records. Also it is useful sometimes to compare what was being built in Britain in 3,000 BC with what was going on elsewhere.

Other
Modern stones and circles, landscapes, history, people and events do not have site entries and do not appear on the Megalithic Map. Nevertheless, we do showcase the very best landscape photographs and pictures of historic buildings. Standing stones and circles are still being built and so we are always keen to see modern examples. Special events such as solstice celebrations and organised field trips are covered and we always like to see portraits of our contributors. We also have an Art Gallery and artistic interpretations of sites by traditional and digital media are very welcome.

Future Developments
The Portal will continue to change and expand. We are always receptive to new ideas and improvements. Make your views known by attaching comments to photographs and articles and by going to the forums or chat rooms. Click on the name of a guide and you can email questions and comments

Surely you're not proposing a readers' wives section, Sem ? :)

Fantastic Thorgrim, this gives me a perfect outline as to what to submit (I wish more websites would do the same).
One query though,my wife assures me she can do a perfect sheela-na-gig,can I submit this and if so under what section?

Excellent article Thorgrim, thanks.

Up for discussion - in addition to this I think we could also have full site and map entries for Modern Stone Circles, in a separate category, as people may be interested in going to visit them?

Another 'in' that I'd very much like to see more of is original or republished articles reviews and other writing. Just submit with the 'Submit News/Article' link, or contact us to discuss longer articles.

Thanks,
Andy
