A trench dug by archaeologists as part of an investigation into life on the Ridgeway during the Bronze Age has been immortalised as a work of art reports This Is Wiltshire.

Artist Simon Callery observed the excavation and now his cast of the 60ft long by 6ft deep trench forms the centrepiece of an English Heritage Art Exhibition.

Called “Archaeology into Art”, it also features photography and painting and is housed at Dover Castle in Kent.

The trench was sunk at St Alfred's Castle near Swindon as archaeologists analysed their finds in a bid to decode the mysteries surrounding life on Britain's oldest walkway some 3,000 years ago.

Mr Callery, 42, said he wanted to create valid artforms based on about seven years of observations of work at the Ridgeway.
