QCA proposals to 'sex-up' the history GCSE and make the qualification more vocational are misguided, says Tristram Hunt of The Guardian. According to a recent report in the Sunday Telegraph, the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) is set once again to reform the history GCSE. In an attempt to make the qualification more vocational, candidates will be able to junk the actual history and instead study the role of museums and galleries, traditional handicrafts, and the role of the media in popularising history.

Among the more gruelling tasks students could be required to undertake would be, for example, "to design a brochure presenting a historical site to the public; devise an advertising campaign for a commemoration of a local event, or write about the management of a heritage site."

What's the point of going somewhere if you don't know what happened there? The current history GCSE encourages students to look at sources and work out meaning and importance for themselves - which means they can apply this to the history they see being made around them. You can't make everything vocational - there has to be some abstraction and the ability to conceptualise. There seems to be a national trend of pride in not thinking. Sorry to rant but this kind of thing is why I have just left teaching.

...or how about help run a (pre)historic web site :-)

Sounds reasonable to me - I was never interested in History at school, except for the prehistoric stuff we did in the last year of Primary school - I shouldn't think they do that any more?

I was lucky enough to choose Latin at a state school later on. I did pretty badly in the language but was interested in the Roman history bits.

Perhaps it would be a way to sneak some prehistory in there, that might make it more interesting.

Currently there's no chance for that unless you live in a local area with prehistory like Avebury. You know kids in America learn more about Stonehenge than they do here! (that's where we get all the queries from).

Cheers,
Andy
