English Heritage has launched Heritage Hikes, a novel range of walking guides which describe inspiring, interesting and beautiful walks around some magnificent English Heritage properties.

Perfectly designed for the British weather, each set of walks is on a waterproof durable laminated card that will fit easily into a cagoul pocket. The easy to follow, circular routes have been independently tested and will be enjoyable for both experienced and novice adult walkers, covering between six and eight miles. They're timed at an easy pace with plenty of opportunities for refreshments and visiting English Heritage properties and other points of interest. The diverse location of English Heritage properties mean walkers can enjoy coastline, parkland, woodland, moorland and mountains.

Carole Souter, Acting Chief Executive of English Heritage, said: "People don't have to travel abroad to enjoy fantastic scenery and moving and memorable historic sites. It is important to remember how much beauty and interest we have on our own doorstep and I'd like to encourage people to stride out to discover their own historic environment. Initiatives like these walking guides will encourage people to go back to the countryside and bring much needed visitors and business to the areas that surround these fascinating historic properties,"

The first two guides available from the series are those for the South West and Yorkshire. The walks include the chance to discover the rolling mystic landscapes of the West Country that surround great and ancient sites like Stonehenge, and walk over chalk downland dotted with wild flowers and down quiet lanes and riversides to the impressive 4500 year old Avebury stone circle or the great fortress at Old Sarum.

The Yorkshire guide includes trails over woodland, fields and riverside paths to the 13th century serene splendour of Rievaulx Abbey, across meadows to Wharram Percy, the extraordinary deserted medieval village, over cliff paths to the powerful and imposing ruins of Whitby Abbey and across beautiful moorland to Middleham Castle, the 12th century fortress and childhood home of Richard III.

Each walk card gives an accurate description of the walk and contains information on parking, public transport and refreshment facilities available en-route. Walking boots or shoes are recommended and suitable clothing that will protect against the weather.

Anyone buying a Heritage Hikes walking guide before June 30th 2002 will receive a set of vouchers giving them 2 for 1 entry before 31st December 2002 to any of the sites featured that are not free.
