Easter Aquhorthies submitted by cosmic : Easter Aquhorthies at NJ732208 in Aberdeenshire is one of the best and most complete examples of a recumbent stone circle. It is almost perfectly circular - only six inches either side of 60 feet on the WNW-ESE diameters. The recumbent is 12feet6inches long by 4feet 6inches high. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Aberdeenshire was re-invented in 1996 when the “old” Grampian Region was split into Aberdeenshire, the City of Aberdeen and Moray. Whilst the new Moray region closely resembled the old Morayshire, the new Aberdeenshire annexed the pre-1975 Banffshire and Kincardineshire. This area contains the highest density of prehistoric and early historic monuments per square mile in the whole of mainland UK. With virtually all the known recumbent stone circles, over half of the known carved stone balls and a significant percentage of Pictish Symbol Stones, the area has lots to offer the megalithic tourist.

From the almost complete perfection of the recumbent circles of Easter Aquorthies, Sunhoney and Loanhead of Daviot, to Marsichal Museum and its collection of stone balls or the Dyce Pictish Symbol Stones a visitor to Aberdeen is spoilt for choice.

Further afield there is the mysteries of Culsh and Capo souterrains, the beauty of Loch Kinnord Symbol Stone or the wonder of Tap O’Noth Hill Fort and the symbol stones of Rhynie. Nearer Peterhead are Netherton, Berrybrae and Aikey Brae RSCs which are all well preserved.

Whilst farming patterns mean that some sites have only limited season availability ( Balquhain RSC, Candle Stone or Castle Fraser Row) much is nearly always available.

All in all this is a excellent area to visit and even residents like myself still find new things to photograph!

Yes indeed, you have brought to us all a splendid pictorial documentation of all these many sites, which otherwise I for one would not have known much about. Fantastic work Cosmic.
