DiscoveriesAn Iron Age hoard of gold coins found on a West Norfolk archaeological site is set to be housed in Lynn. The coins, which were found in a mud-filled end of a cow's leg bone containing 20 Gallo-Belgic E coins or Staters dating back to 60-50 BC, were unearthed at the Sedgeford Historical and Archaeological Project (Sharp) in August last year.Nineteen other coins had already been found during the annual excavations at the site, including 11 in 2003 and eight in previous years.
The hoard which caused great interest in archaeological circles, was taken to the British Museum in London after they were discovered by metal detectorist Kevin Woodward.
However, the coins are set to return to West Norfolk with the Lynn museum poised to buy the hoard, formally declared treasure trove at an inquest a year ago.
Fundraising has been staged to raise the necessary cash to buy the coins, which it is hoped will become one of the key attractions at the museum when it re-opens in 2006 following a major £1 million facelift.
Temporary exhibitions will be installed initially, pending the arrival of the conserved timbers of Norfolk's Bronze Age timber circle, Seahenge, and the unveiling of permanent displays the following year.
The £4,000 needed to purchase the hoard has been raised by the Friends of Lynn Museums together with contributions from the Museums, Libraries and Archives/Victoria and Albert purchase grant fund and the Headley Trust, which was established to help museums acquire objects declared as treasure.
The hoard captured the imagination when it was unearthed and news that it is to remain locally has been welcomed by area museums officer Robin Handley, who said it would make a great feature of the museum.
Sharp, which aims to build a complete history of Sedgeford was begun in 1996 and has involved the extensive excavation of a Saxon cemetery in the valley of the Heacham river.
About 200 skeletons and evidence of an Iron Age settlement have so far been uncovered.
