Neolithic and Bronze AgeBuilding digging out the foundations of a new Alloa housing development have unearthed Iron Age graves containing a warrior and a woman reports The Scotsman and The Herald. The two graves are less than 20ft apart and one, which has been dated from the Iron Age, about 200BC to 200AD, contained the skeleton of a man clutching a sword, surrounded by valuable toe rings, an ornate copper pin and glass beads as if buried with full honours.
The man - believed to have been aged 25-35 - would have been the main figure in the area. The other grave, containing female remains, dates back to the early Bronze Age and contained an ornate food vessel and copper alloy items dating back to between 2500 and 1500BC.
Experts who announced the discovery of the site at Alloa, Clackmannanshire last night described the grave as one of the most "valuable and exciting" to have been found on these shores.
