Pre-ContactSummer officially arrives Thursday and Scottsdale resident Nathaniel Hathaway will be there to greet it - just as he has for nearly 20 years. Hathaway and his group will watch the sun's rays form a line across a five-column stone monument near Galvin Parkway and McDowell Road designed just for that purpose. The retired Scottsdale Unified School District history teacher and about 40 of his family and friends will mark the summer solstice sunrise at Papago Park.
Just like people around the globe the group will gather just before dawn so they are there in plenty of time for the light show. The modern monument honors the Hohokam and serves as an entry point to the Phoenix park, which straddles Scottsdale.
Archeologists believe the Hohokam used Papago Park to chart the summer solstice and winter solstice, as well as the vernal (spring) and autumnal (fall) equinoxes.
Hathaway, who taught history at Coronado High School, said he looks forward to the annual event. "I'm an educator and I think that an education should include a little bit of fun," he said.
