Other ArchaeologyLabour proposals to cut Fife Council’s £18,000 archaeology service by almost 50% are to be opposed by the Liberal Democrats tomorrow, writes Michael Alexander.Senior Liberal Democrat Councillor Andrew Arbuckle will criticise the Labour-run council at the council’s budget meeting in Glenrothes.
He will say, “The Huns and Visigoths within the Labour administration intend removing half the budget from the archaeology service within the council.
“This would be a loss to the people of Fife, and their children, of part of our heritage. I think to slash the budget of such a valuable and well-respected service would be incredibly shortsighted. The archaeology service is incredible value for money.”
Councillor Arbuckle said that just recently the service teamed up with Channel 4’s time team on the excavation of a Bronze Age Cemetery at Leven, which was described as one of the most significant Bronze Age cemetery sites in Scotland.
“The service has also been involved in the discovery of early Bronze Age axes and “the Carpow log boat” just off Newburgh last year.”
Meanwhile, the Fife Lib Dems also plan to oppose cuts of over £900,000 to Fife’s school budget.
Leader of the Liberal Democrats on the Council, Elizabeth Riches, described the cuts as “madness” when attempts are being made to raise the standard of education in the Kingdom.
“Headteachers across the Kingdom could be faced with the choice of losing a teacher or delaying essential repairs to school buildings.
“That’s an unacceptable choice that Liberal Democrats will simply not support.”
“In another attack on our education service, the Labour Administration is proposing to dispense with the use of foreign language assistants.
Scots were always polyglots. The ability to converse in another language is an ever-increasing requirement for today’s international society. We oppose this suggestion that heads us off in the wrong direction.
“Instead of cutting the fund Lib Dems will propose that it should be doubled so that more schools can have access to this important service.”
