Re: Impotency of modern ¨druids by Anonymous on Thursday, 16 June 2005
Ït´s really a laughing matter, that people who call themselves ¨druids¨cannot even use their combined ¨powers¨to save ancient sacred sites from destruction' such as the Tara'Skyrne Valley from a major motorway, amongst other things' I still see it as a club of frustrated ex'Christians, the only power they have is to use the PC´s to alert people'the same as the rest of us' so who needs them !!!!

Anon, you've opened a whole new debate.
Modern "druids" were invented by Dr Price and Iolo Morgannwg in the early 19th century. The originals were wiped out by the Romans.
Both of these statements will be disagreed with but in essence they are true.

I find it curious how "the Romans" could have "wiped out" the original "Druids" completely. After all, "the Romans" never conquered Pictland, and never tried to conquer Ireland. Or do you imagine that only Gaul and southern Britain had "Druids"?

In addition, the "modern 'druids'" to which you refer were founded before the time of "Iolo Morganwg" and his chums, and date back to, at least, 1717, when the earliest "lodge" of these Meso-Druids was founded at the Appletree Tavern in London. These aren't exactly "modern," however, but are actually "Meso-Druids," not quite the same thing as Modern Pagan Druids (Celtic Reconstructionists) or even Neo-Druids (generally Neo-Pagan or even New Age), _much less_ the same thing as the Draoidhean/Draoithe of Gaelic Traditionalist and Celtic Revivalist groups.

But yes, there's no evidence that conclusively connects the ancient "Druids" with Stonehenge and other such structures.

As for saving the Tara-Skryne Valley from rape by those who would sacrifice their own parents on the altar of the Shiny Thing, the bulldozers have yet to move in, so don't count any chickens before they're hatched. And though I don't have much faith in what Con Connor and his pals are planning to do on the Solstice, there are other "Druidic" folk involved in the campaign to save the Tara-Skryne Valley, some of whom have contributed to getting the site listed as "endangered," and some of us have our own styles of Draoidheachd which don't rely on "white light" and other New Age silliness or Neo-Pagan "Love, Light, and Life" ethics which forbid the use of destructive magic (in short, some of us *will* curse).

Though I'm not registering with the site (at this time), I don't want to be "anonymous," so I'll identify myself (by the pen-name by which I am most widely known): Croman mac Nessa.

In addition to magic, some druids utilize modern means to achieve a goal such as exploring legal avenues in international and EU law.

There is a strong case to be made in the international courts regarding the Hill of Tara, and although this has been pointed out again and again to a certain organization, they have consistently failed to take advantage of, or act upon the legal advice and prepared briefs offered gratis.

Rather than have such impotence artificially imposed by a certain activist organization, some druids choose to take independent legal action-not for thier own glory, but for the greater good.
