Digging for artifacts in Canada

Pre-ContactCountry: Canada A dig expected to uncover one of the most important archeological sites in southern Ontario is scheduled to begin this summer in north Lambton. The two-year dig has been planned with the co-operation of the Kettle and Stony Point First Nation.“It’s very exciting because it’s an undisturbed area,” says Nancy van Sas, who has assisted with preparatory work at the site.
Speaking to members of the Seaway Kiwanis Club recently, she described her volunteer work with Dr. Chris Ellis at the site just east of Arkona.
The archeology team believes the area is rich in 3,000-year-old artifacts from the late archaic period. “It’s a rare area that’s undisturbed because the river flooded shortly after it was occupied and left a thick layer of silt over top. This seldom happens,” van Sas said.
“A farmer in the area found animal bone tools and a spearhead. They’re hoping to find more of the same. It’s research happening right in your own backyard.”
Several First Nation students will assist archeology students on the project, she said.
The Arkona site was discovered in 1977 when an archeologist was canoeing the Ausable River noticed artifacts “literally sticking out” of the eroded river bank,” van Sas said.
Later, an archeologist at a nearby cottage dug up a large spear point in his fire pit. Nothing more occurred until 2001 when test excavations began.
“It’s a long process because there are other sites that need to be excavated that are more time sensitive because someone wants to build something,” van Sas said. They take priority.
