Barbrook Cairn
Barbrook Cairn submitted by PaulM : Barbrook ringcairn, north-east of Barbrook I, Big Moor, Derbyshire The cairn as it now stands was restored in the 1960s having been disturbed in the past, like many in this area, by antiquarians. During restoration, fragments of cremated bones and pieces of pottery from a collared urn were discovered in the centre, along with an urn covering the cremated bones of a child. Four stones, now in ... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Probably the most we've ever stayed in one area for a stones meet! Details

1)
10am Parking for Brown Edge, approx SK277783, along B6054.
SUBJECT TO MILITARY ACTIVITY! Just hope those red flags aren't flying! Searching for possible remains of this Circle. Anyone gifted with reading contour lines, and a GPS gizmo especially needed!

2)
12pm Investigating Lady's Cross & possible circle, across the road. SK273783
As Alastair McIvor writes:
"Another interesting feature on the moor is Lady's Cross, marked on the OS map in that gothic script that can cover features ranging in age from the paleolithic to the middle ages I am uncertain of the origins of this monument, it appears as though it could have been a true cross, or some sort of Christian marker. The next best guess would have to be a gibbet though. I include it here though because of what is next to it in the heather. I am sure others who have hunted the moors for circles not in the main guide books will be familiar with the site below. Are they or aren't they? A few rocks protruding from the heather, in a circle....."

3)
Barbrook III Circle SK284774, Parking approx. SK283778
1pm

4)
Barbrook V Circle SK267751, and stones to the east. Parking nr junction of A621 at SK278740.
1:45pm

5)
Barbrook IV Circle SK289756 Parking SK295750
3:45pm

6)
Barbrook I, and II Circles SK279756 Parking SK281752 5pm
Recommend bringing a torch for these! Given their ease to find, and short distance, a twilight / dark visit here will add a twist to the day!

7) Tea at the Peacock, (Puddings included if you wish!) near the Owler Bar roundabout. If we ascertain numbers by 1pm, perhaps booking a table would be helpful.

Waterproof footwear recommended, I was up there at the weekend & the moors are sodden.
