Nine Stones Close
Nine Stones Close submitted by PaulM : General view of Nine Stones Close stone circle (Derbyshire) (Vote or comment on this photo)
Starting at Car Parking SK229619 for Robin Hood's Stride, 10am, allowing something like 2 hours - this is for visiting a cluster of sites.

Robin Hood's Stride outcrop and prehistoric rock art & Hermit's Cave

Nine Stones Close / Grey Ladies

Cratcliff Rocks Hillfort

Castle Ring Hillfort

Green Low Chambered Cairn Parking SK 228 575 - very limited here; will have to be creative, and maybe some park further into Aldwark. (top 1; there are 2 Green Lows in Derbyshire!)

Maybe a brief detour on the way to Brassington for Slipper Low SK 221 569, and other nearby un-named tumulus.
Brassington Moor Stone Circle

This has likely been destroyed, but we'll have a scout around the moor, and see if anything can be seen. NMR lists it more optimistically than other sources. The most accurate info I can get is Square SK 23 54 from NMR. Some time exploring and viewing from footpaths E & W of Brassington may yield some clues.

Given we're passing a few other stones en-route, we'll take a look.

The Stoup

The Bradstone

Including the 'new' stone just to the East, and maybe a look for the lost Wirksworth stone, which would sit on the edge of a quarry.

If the daylight (SUNSET around 16:50) and weather hold out, we might go up to Wirksworth Moor (have a look at the standing stone, and have a scout around for another lost circle, which would be in Square SK 30 53. ALSO, there is a report of another standing stone in the area, and I have the grid ref for this, so, if there is chance, we'll go take a look.

FOOD / DRINK!

Given that some of us can not stop late enough for a curry in Bakewell, I suggest those of us wanting some refreshment (food and / or drink), use Wirksworth; there are some pubs (prob. best for food is the Hope & Anchor on the market place)or a decent chippy across the road, which has tables; there are a few other pubs, takeaways, or shops so there should be something here for most tastes!

SUPPORTIVE FOOTWEAR & APPROPRIATE CLOTHING ARE ESSENTIAL

Packed lunch, likely food & refreshment in Wirksworth at the end of the day.

John Barnatt lists the grid ref for Brassington Moor as SK218578, but he says that the two circles (which probably weren't true stone circles but the kerbs of denuded barrows or chambered tombs) were destroyed in the 18th century.
