Dartmoor's conservationists are clearing scrub to try to discover the secrets of one of the Moor's historic mysteries. "The Earthworks" on Roborough Down, near Yelverton, are an archaeological puzzle and scrub clearance is required so that archaeologists can explore and try to explain the site.
This Sunday (27th February at 10.00 am) volunteers from the Dartmoor Preservation Association (DPA) and Roborough Commoners Association will join forces to clear the scrub which has hidden the historic site for centuries. Please bring a hot drink, packed lunch and suitable winter clothing and gardening gloves! Lift share where possible.
DPA development officer Dru Butterfield said "This is a massive task and we have to work quickly to clear the scrub before the bird nesting season starts. No one knows for sure exactly what "The Earthworks" are. They are one of the remaining mysteries of Dartmoor's past. Hopefully, clearing the site will enable archaeologists from the Dartmoor National Park Authority and English Heritage to solve the puzzle at last".
The site is on the main road from Plymouth to Yelverton, shortly after the café on the left-hand side. Map reference SX 505 639. Look for the trig point on the Ordnance Survey map.
If you would like to join them please contact Dru Butterfield e-mail [email protected] or phone 01626 355314 (answermachine).
