The Chief Executive of the Dartmoor Preservation Association has announced that a protest rally is to be organised as part of its on-going campaign to Save Crownhill Down from destruction by clay multinational Imerys.

The rally will include walks and horse rides, all to draw attention to the threat to destroy Crownhill Down by quarrying and waste dumping.

The campaign boasts an impressive lust of allies including the Ramblers Association, the Open Spaces Society, Plantlife UK, the Council for British Archaeology and the landowner.

What has emerged during the first months of campaigning is that Crownhill Down is of great value, a rare piece of lowland moor on Plymouth’s back doorstep, rich in archaeology, flora and fauna. Over the next few months we will be revealing more of Crownhill Down’s secrets.

The DPA will also be challenging the politicians and planners to intervene and pledge to fight for Crownhill Down. The mineral planning permissions were granted many years ago and the group is also challenging Imerys to give up this permission, as they did with their other permission to quarry the Blackabrook Valley. Alternatively the company could defend its case by submitting a fresh planning application and subjecting its arguments to a modern public inquiry.
