Castle Friends idea for Anniversery is the Torc of the Town

A Replica of the Tamworth Torc is to go on display in the town - as a special birthday gift to mark the 40th anniversary of the Friends of Tamworth Castle.
The Friends have commissioned a copy of the famous gold necklace - one of very few ever found in this country - to be displayed in the Castle to commemorate the group's landmark birthday.
Since its inception in 1967, the Friends group has provided a vital link between the Castle Museum and the public.
To celebrate, a party, attended by the Mayor, Councillor Mick Oates and Mayoress, Councillor Mary Oates was held on Saturday, July 14 when the replica Glascote Torc was presented to Louise Troman, Castle manager, by Pat Thompson, President of the Friends.
"The museum world is a competitive place, with each trying to attract its share of the visiting public," said Pat.
"The Torc has been made for Tamworth Castle to help accomplish this."
It will go on display in the Castle Museum within the 'Tamworth Story'.
In the last 12 years alone, the Friends have supported the Castle by raising over £35,000 and given up their time to marshal and clean and record the archives an artefacts.
The inaugural meeting of the Friends took place on Thursday, July 13 1967 at the Castle when Miss Tarjan, the Castle Curator, outlined the aim of the group: "The purpose of the association is to provide means for those interested in this noble edifice and in the history of this ancient Borough to further these interests," she said.
"Those interested in museums and the work they do, in archaeology, natural history, heraldry, and many other subjects, should find something to their taste among the lectures, visits to museums and historic buildings and other events that will be arranged."
It was decided that part of the money raised by the membership subscriptions would go towards the purchase of new items for the museum's collections.
Today, the Friends has a membership of 300 and welcomes new members. Application forms are available from the Castle itself, Tamworth Information Centre or the Friends web-site:
