From: Martin Byrne I don't know if any of you got to see it, but Duchas just got a rap on the knuckles on tonight's nine o'clock news. Topic: insensitive restoration of a monument. Duchas have been working on Listoghil, the central monument at Carrowmore while the site is closed for the season.

They have surrounded the chamber of the monument, which is roughly aligned to the midwinter solstice, in a stone-lined pit. This monument has 2 pieces of megalithic art discovered in the last few years. While building the pit, they were driving around in diggers which left tracks 40cm deep around some of the monuments.

Last week Phillip was highlighting the fact that they are planning to build a sceptic tank 7 meters from a destroyed monument. Note that Duchas will not allow farmers to erect fences or plant trees within 50 m of a listed monument. Do I smell double standards?

This is a topic I was commenting on before in relation to the disastrous botch job which was done on the entrance to Knowth East. Tonight it was two archeologists, Stefan Bergh and Patricia Mulligan protesting.

Should we be protecting ancient monuments from Duchas? Should the rules/laws governing the reconstruction of monuments be changed? It is becoming a very topical subject. Comments anyone?

Slán,

Martin
