Callanish I
Callanish I submitted by Catherine Stallybrass : This is, at least to my mind, the most beautiful megalithic site anywhere! We were lucky enough to visit on a perfect evening when the full moon rose straight opposite the setting sun - the only problem was which way to take photos! (Vote or comment on this photo)
The mysterious Callanish Stones in the Western Isles will be the centrepiece of a live broadcast being planned to capture a rare lunar event. The standing stones on Lewis have intrigued archaeologists and historians for 6,000 years. Erected by Neolithic farming people, they are believed to have a special association with the cycle of the moon.

The site includes a central circle with four limbs running out in line with the points of the compass. Some of the stones are said to be aligned with the sun and moon at various times of the year and could have been used to predict eclipses and the coming of the seasons.

Every 18 and a half years, a moonlit event culminates in the appearance of the "Earth Mother", a figure seemingly outlined in the shape of the hills south of Callanish. The next is due in 2006.

After rising over the figure, the moon passes through the Callanish Stones and, as this happens, if a person stands on the hillock at the higher south end of the site, the moon is "reborn" with a person silhouetted within it.

Victor Reijs, an archaeo-cosmo enthusiast, plans to broadcast the 2006 event worldwide via the internet and is on Lewis gathering support to set up a web cam.

What is the best time in 2006 to see this effect at Callanish? I would consider going over there to see it for real, but I imagine that accomodation would be very hard to get. Any tips? Would any special trips be organised to see it, from Stornoway, for instance??

      Hi Victor

Thanks for the information. I had emailed you a reply via that page, but have just found out that it didn't go through. Basically, I was saying that I had found a list on the previous web page, too, and wondered if 29 Sept 2006 is the best day to see the phenomenon of the moon rolling along the hills of the 'Sleeping Beauty' feature? According to your lists, there are several days to witness standstills, etc, and because I have a mental block about moon-movements (!) I'd have appreciated a simple list of days when the Sleeping Beauty effect happens. I understand that the Moon has to be moving very low, along the southern sky for this to work. Are there reasonably good times before that date too?
Sorry to be a nuisance! Now everyone knows how dumb I am!
      Thanks,
      Angie
