A plan to cover 3,000-year-old cairns on Exmoor with fabric to help protect them has (not now) been rejected. The National Trust applied for planning permission for the scheme on Dunkery Beacon, but this was turned down by the National Park Authority.

The Trust wants to cover the cairns with a fabric, which would then be covered with stone and seeded with heather and moorland grasses.

But the Park Authority said it was "unconvinced" about the idea.

Chris France, head of planning and community, told BBC News Online: "The majority acknowledged that some repair and action was needed, but were unconvinced about covering.

'Seriously deteriorate'

"They felt that you wouldn't then be able to see the archaeology, which is an essential part of the area.

"The plans were not refused outright: the trust can do some covering work on one of the mounds to see it if is successful, and repairs to another."

The National Trust says the cairns, located on the highest and most exposed point within the National Park, are being damaged by people removing stones.

Chris Hewitt, National Trust property manager, said: "The Trust has three months in which to appeal, if it chooses to do so, but we are seriously worried that the fragile status of the cairns may seriously deteriorate over the forthcoming winter months."

This is barmy!
It's lucky they don't own the Rollright area - (they don't do they?!) - or they'd be patching up all the holes!
If people want to see some decent cairns they can come to Dartmoor instead: it would take them a few hundred years to remove all those stones! (Sometimes they re-arrange them, though, as in the case of Yar Tor summit cairn....)

Cairns to get protective covering
Bronze Age cairns on Exmoor are to be wrapped in fabric to protect them from
souvenir hunters.

The ancient monuments on Dunkery Beacon in Somerset are thought to be more
than 3,000 years old.

The National Trust said they had been damaged over the years by walkers and
sightseers taking stones as souvenirs.

An earlier attempt to get the cairns covered was turned down, but an appeal
this week to the Planning Inspectorate was successful.

The trust's countryside manager Nigel Hester said: "We are delighted by this
decision. We will be beginning work on the cairns over the forthcoming
months to protect them in advance of the winter weather."

The geo-textile fabric will be covered with stones and then seeded with
heather and moorland grasses.

This technique has been used elsewhere recently - see my Forum post here. I agree this artificial matting sounds suspect to me, what do others think?

The lunatics clearly now run the National Trust Asylum - I did tell you on the 1st April that there were plans afoot to replace Stonehenge with a fibreglass replica, but nearly everyone thought that it was an April Fool joke! Look and learn children - look and learn. What price now the Silbury Hill ski slope?
